Lyonel Feininger, 1871-1956 New York, sailboats on a foothill lake, watercolor and
ink on handmade paper, signed and dated 1949; According to his son, it is one of
several designs created for the New York-based shipping company American Export Lines.
Here the sketch was intended to be incorporated into a large mural for the dining
salon of the new ocean liner SS Constitution (launched in 1950). approx. 15x62 cm,
elaborately framed under glass 59x107 cm; with manual photography expertise from
son Theodore Lux Feininger (1910-2011), from 1991; The work for this commission reflects
Lyonel Feininger's enthusiasm for marine subjects. Despite the fact that the mural
for the ocean liner SS Constitution was not realized, the present work depicts an
atmospheric reference to the history of seafaring with a striking sailing ship in
the outermost panorama of a coastal landscape shrouded in fog.
