Albert & Cie; AGbeginning 1889. The change to a limited liability company was 25.4.1935
in order to continue the AG, which had gone bankrupt in 1935. The shareholders' meeting
on 28 May 1940decided to convert the GmbH back into an AG with effect from 1 January
1940. From the company's history: 1861: Founding of the factory, start of rapid press
construction with a workforce of ten. After 1870/71, major upswing for the company,
which from 1873 traded under the name 'Schnellpressenfabrik Frankenthal Albert &
Cie.' 1876: Establishmentof its own foundry. 1882: Construction of the first illustration
printing machine. Around 1884: Construction of a new building. 1899: Expansion of
the manufacturing programme to include the construction of platen presses, lithographic
printing machines, double high- speed presses, sheet metal printing machines and
two-colour machines. In 1897, a new foundry was built, and shortly afterwards the
first two-speed machine was constructed. In 1904, production began on zinc printing
rotarypresses, the precursors to offset presses, thefirst of which were built in
Frankenthal in 1910/11; the factory continued to expand. At the end of 1934, the
factory management at the time was forced to suspend payments; however, a rescue
company was successfully established, thereby preserving the Frankenthal rapid press
factory. By 1936, the workforce had grown to 500 again, and by 1941 to around 1,500.
In 1947, reconstruction and new production began. From 1961, a branch factory was
established in Kusel. In 1971, thecompany was renamed Albert Frankenthal AG. In 1995,
it merged with Koenig & Bauer to form Koenig & Bauer-Albert AG (KBA), Würzburg.
In 1998, it merged with KBA- Planea AG to form Koenig & Bauer AG.
