Two pairs of Lycoptera on positive and negative plates, Liaoning (Rehe Province), China, 20 million years old, extinct fish genus that lived in today's China, Korea, Mongolia and Siberia, a pair L. 7 cm, the second split brown one approx. 6 cm, both plates 350g, 17x12 cm, museum; Lycoptera is anextinct genus of fish that lived from the LateJurassic to the Cretaceous Period in what is now China, Korea, Mongolia and Siberia. It is known from a wealth of fossils representing sixteen species and serves as an important fossil clue used to date geological formationsin China. Along with the genus Peipiaosteus, Lycoptera are considered a defining member of the Jehol Biota, a prehistoric ecosystem famous for its early birds and dinosaurs that thrived for 20 million years during the early Cretaceous period, the Jiufotang Formation here containing a rich one Lycoptera ichthyofauna. They are the oldest fossil members of the osteoglossamorpha that are still alive today
