| Beschreibung | Henri Joseph Harpignies, 1819 Valenciennes - 1916 Saint-Prive, "Peniche sur Canal", one of two studies for the painting "The Briare Canal (Loire)" (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires, probably around 1859), but probably a view of the canal near Nevers, pencil on thin paper, signed and dated lower left 1853, Verso studio stamp from 1879, browned or stained, water stain at the bottom center, label from Galerie Tarcia, Paris, sheet approx. 18x24 cm, framed under glass 27x32 cm (frame has been ordered), Dr. Jean Pierre Cappoen lists the present work in his catalog "Harpignies et les Salons"; we would like to thank him for his art historical advisory board; Provenance: South German private collection, Orleans Auction Savot 1979, owned by Harpignie's student Raymond Verdun; Harpignies began his passion for painting as a self-taught artist, from 1846 he studied with Jean-Alexis Achard in Brussels, he traveled Europe and studied at the Academie de France in Rome |
